I had seasonal asthma, but it went away when I began drinking green tea mixed with lemon, honey, and ginger. Now my 14 old grandson has it and I keep reading conflicting advice on what he should and should not eat. I would like to feed him grits and I won’t to know if it will tricker his asthma?

It is weird but adding lemon, honey and ginger is likely to trigger my asthma more than help it.

I think with food for your grandson, you need to ask his parents, who if unsure should speak to his medic.

Asthma is so wide ranging that what helps one person can be bad for another.

I agree with Homely2 - there is not a set diet for asthma and different foods can be triggers, or not, for different people.

There's also no real evidence that eating any particular foods can help asthma and it shouldn't be managed this way. Your grandson should in any case be receiving the appropriate medication under medical supervision.

You or his parents can call the asthma nurses on 0300 2225800 or WhatsApp on 07999 377 775 Monday-Friday 0915-5pm if you're concerned or want to understand more about how you can help your grandson.

On reading the post from CGPLFH, (Tyrese777) they mention ‘grits’ - which are a Southern States dish, made from dried, ground corn (Maize) cooked with various liquids, including water, milk, or broth, until the mix reaches a thick, creamy, porridge-like consistency. The telephone numbers therefore would need to be amended to +44 300 2225800 and WhatsApp to +44 7999 377775. The times of contact would also be very different - depending on what part of the states CGPLFH (Tyrese777) is in. The States are 4–8 hours behind the UK depending on where they are, as the USA straddles multiple time zones. 😊

Oh that's true - thanks for pointing that out, DollyDutchGirl. Just checked again and Tyrese777's profile actually says she's in the US which I totally missed before!

I'm not sure how helpful our UK numbers would be, Tyrese777, though you could try - but the nurses won't know about the US system. As DollyDutchGirl says, the times I've given are for UK times so you need to adjust if you do want to call the UK helpline (if you're East Coast for example they would close at 12 midday your time).

You or his parents may instead want to try the American Lung Association helpline - I have no idea how helpful it is but they will at least know the system and be able to advise on your grandson's options for treatment: lung.org/help-support

I know you believe that the green tea helped, but all published research, with proper conrols (placebo etc) indicates that there is no effect of dietary supplements. There could have been other reasons why you got better. In my experience, western medicine works for asthma (unfortunately, w/o curing it).
