Everything online seems to point towards hypothyroidism causing us to feel cold but I am so hot and sweaty all the time! Is this possible with hypothyroidism or is it menopause/perimenopause?

Hypothyroidism and...heat?
I too can get hot/ sweaty if my thyroid medication is not optimal. Equally, this worsened for me in peri menopause.
Regarding all things menopausal, it may be useful to have a look at Dr Louise Newson’s free Balance App, as I find it really useful for comparing medication options & having up to date research articles. There is also an ability to post questions.
Yes, definitely, and even without being in peri or meno. There is a study I found that says we could even have higher temps with that, when hypo. Symptoms can be very confusing
I suffer both cold intolerance and heat intolerant. Summer is unbearable for me.
I too have a problem with the heat… the worst for me is a warm bathroom when I have a shower! I have to have the window open, the radiator off, even in winter! It’s unbearable!
Thankfully, I have a very efficient air conditioning unit for my workshop where I spend most of the summer days with the temperature set at 16C!
Oddly enough, I don’t really have too much of a problem with the cold… as long as my feet are warm, the rest of me is too. 🤭
Maybe I’m just weird, but I found that when I gave up gluten I stopped getting as hot and sweaty, especially at night.
I have been gluten free three weeks now and I too have noticed not as hot at night and sleeping much better
I've been gluten free for 20+ years (coeliac) and still have night sweats and periods of constantly breaking into a sweat, unfortunately.
I have what hubby calls a very narrow operating temperature range.Anything below 18C and I am freezing and anything above 21C is too hot for me.
😂 Me too!
This is a very interesting question!
I'm 68 yrs old and (obv) in full menopause. I have auto immune hypothyroidism and coeliac disease since my twenties and while I don't get cold so much any more I do regularly go through periods of maybe a couple of weeks when I'm constantly breaking out in a full body sweat and feel overheated for no apparent reason. It starts one day, lasts a week or two then just as suddenly stops again. As in, it's not a random occasional occurrence. I'm fairly fit and not overweight. I didn't go through a period of intense hot flashes while going through menopause - I had a hysterectomy at 40 but kept my ovaries so I don't actually know when I went through menopause.
Can anyone offer any explanation for this? It's a very strange phenomenon and quite uncomfortable.
I too had a hysterectomy at a similar age to you and then hypothyroidism started not long afterwards. My feet are often very cold but the rest of my body feeling very hot indeed at the same time. 20 degrees C is usually not warm enough for my feet. Lots of hospital tests to find cause of raised temperature and sweats but they got fed up when usual tests gave no clue and decided to discharge me! Maybe someone else on this site may have found an answer to this.
Another one here that gets very warm, and just can't operate in hot temperatures outside! I don't get sweaty, or have hot flashes, I just feel too warm a lot of the time.
Unfortunately, I am starting to become more and more heat intolerant, whilst my husband gets more and more cold intolerant. Causing a few issues in winter with the central heating and agreeing on when it should be on etc.
I've been on HRT for a while (and am only peri-menopausal with very few symptoms anyway), been completely gluten free for 4 years, and on T3 only for over a a year now.
Thanks everyone. I'm in Italy and am dreading the summer. Even 15 degrees feels unbearable. 😪
Hi
I too suffer with slightest rise in temperature weather picks up and I'm post menopausal! It's happened for years. I'm either frozen and suffering with Raynaurds or sweating, hot & itchy with swollen hands and feet. Since recently finding my thyroid has atrophied, I have read that it's another symptom of low/poorly managed thyroid issues. So you're not alone🤷🏻xx
I'm a hot hypo. I have only ever felt hypo cold once and it was horrible. But it was just for a few hours and happened during a mediation change.
I have been a hot and sweaty mess since puberty really but it is probably worse now than ever before. I haven't been able to wear makeup in about 2 decades. My face pours and drips with sweat. My scalp has rivulets running down my neck. It's terribly uncomfortable. I'm fully HRTd.
I often notice, if I check my temp when I'm dripping wet and sitting under a fan, that my core temperature is quite low. I'm not sweating when my core temp is up. It all makes physical work very uncomfortable. But I'm used to it. My dad used to sweat a lot too.
I was very hypothyroid with a TSH of 60 0dd ,but I sweated profusely, along with gut and stomach issues, now I'm on back on T4 and I'm sweating even more, with all gut issues ect returning, I just can't seem to win with the thyroid medication truthfully I felt way better off it and I've no thyroid 😯
