Education of living
Very simple - lots of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, smaller amounts of wholegrain carbohydrates. Lots of people have found a Mediterranean style diet helpful. If you can avoid highly processed foods, foods high in fat or salt then great.Get gentle exercise and build up gradually.
But the biggest, most fundamental change that will improve your liver health is to stop drinking alcohol.
Yes, alcohol kills not just the liver, the whole body. Anyone having trouble staying stopped, may join AA for free and try it for few months.
My husband went sober overnight in December 2022 following years of heavy drinking and 6 months of very heavy drinking following the death of his father. It's been 18 months and while the struggle is real, I am absolutely certain had he continued to drink I would be a widow now.
Alcoholics recover. I am so glad you found AA helpful - it's a powerful tool for so many people x
Very nice. Yes, initially it was a struggle, because I came into the rooms without any knowledge of what I was up against. Slowly as the fog lifted, I ran into some great workshops and mentors that led me to the book Aloholics Anonymous. What a blessing! There I learned how the alcoholic mind operates. It seeks one thing, that is relief, and alcohol was providing it, but since our body is diseased the body wants more and more. Restless irritable and discontented when not feed it. Today the obsession has been lifted by working the program of Alcoholics anonymous. Today its about being spiritually fit by watching my selfishness and self-centeredness.
Everyone’s liver is different and our diets differ greatly which can negatively impact or positively impact your liver. Alcohol is the obvious one, but regarding food it’s not a given that say lots of sugar will kill your liver in the same way zero sugar will benefit your liver. Myself I don’t drink anymore and try to eat a healthy balanced diet as best as I can as often as I can which I find works for me and that’s the key - it’s all about what works for you. If you have any liver issues it’s always best to seek the advice of a nutritionist if you can when it comes to diet. Some people need lots of protein, others don’t. Some people are on restricted diets, some aren’t. Good luck and take care.
The British Liver Trust website has information on diet and nutrition.
We take the approach of giving the liver as little as possible work to do - so everything as natural as possible, home cook where you can using fresh produce if possible. But never gone over the top with it all - lifes miserable enough with liver disease without not being able to enjoy food!
