Inflamation/magnesium

Hi Everyone, I have a question for the wise ones. I will try to keep it as short as possible. In early September feeling good I took the heavy loppers to the climbing roses on the house, next day my right shoulder was very painful and my left sore and with pins and needles at certain angles. After a few days I went to a physio, who diagnosed damage to the rotating cuffs and who worked hard on both shoulders, next day I felt like I had been run over by a bus. Sleepless nights are the norm since, with no sign of any kind of recovery. Apart from the shoulders, and before that, I have been feeling exceptionally tired, bordering on exhaustion, even after doing nothing, somedays falling asleep and going to bed after dinner. I wondered if I had some sort of deficiency and decided to ask my GP to do some blood tests. I the early hours of the morning Iwas going, I awoke and was heading for the bathroom when I realised that I was 'lurching' like a drunk, at first I thought I was imagining it and made myself walk the lines in the floorboards to confirm.

I went that morning to the GP, who sent me to an assessment centre, where they did tests, and sent me on to another large hospital for scans.

There they said that my blood was too thick and my heart was working overtime, hence the fatigue, injected me with blood thinner in the stomach, kept me in two days, did a scan of my head, no damage, no stroke. By now I was feeling normal, brighter than before and was sent home. I have been researching a bit, and several times have come across articles about Magnesium deficiency, which has symptoms of all the things I was experiencing, like cramps, inflamation, fatigue, thick blood, etc.

So I decided to see if I could get a reading and take supplements, but was told that because I was now taking prescribed blood thinners, It would be unwise as Magnesium would also thin blood. So my question is, has anyone else come up against this, I would much prefer to drop the prescribed Eliquis 2.5.mg and take a more natural remedy that may also address the other symptoms. I am four years in with PMRon 3.mg a day. Thanks to all for reading this.

I am impressed with your GP, and would prefer to follow their advice initially. It sounds like this could have had consequences if it hadn’t been (quickly) diagnosed. Drugs are more rigorously tested than supplements. I hear you about Magnesium though..

Well I am on a DOAC (direct acting anti coagulant) - Pradaxa - and I take magnresium when required for atrial fibrillation, under the orders of my cardiology team!!! It is used regularly here in cardiology.

A study in 1995 found "Magnesium has only minimal effects on coagulation which are unlikely to be clinically important."

WebMD says that in theory it may "thin the blood" but is unlikely to have a significant effect.

It is difficult to overdose on magnesium, it gives you the runs!

However, I wouldn't drop the Eliquis, I'd try taking the magnesium for the other symptoms and see if it makes a difference. But don't overdo it.
