Cough

Hi, I am still getting used to this new life. For the last couple of weeks I have been having fits of coughing mainly last thing at night or first thing in the morning. No cold, sore throat, fever or other viral symptom but my chest is very noisy and loose . I have left side heart failure and pulmonary hypertension and have no idea if this is a new symptom or even a reaction to ace inhibitors. I've been fine on them since January. Has anyone experienced this?

Im on ramapril and take it at night. Also the morning cough. You could ask GP to try a different one.

Sadly, yes! I too cough a lot. I have been told its related to HF - and may indicate that you are retaining fluid. Talk to your GP/HF nurse or the BHF nurses in case you need your meds adjusting. Its very irritating - both for me and for others around me. Things got a lot better after a new diuretic was introduced. But really, you need to consult with the medics on this.

hi Mtym. I also have a cough caused by Ramipril. I’ve been switched to Losartan but the cough is still there after 18 months. They keep saying it should go away eventually. Anyway, dry cough is a common side effect of Ramipril.

on Ramipril from last 3 weeks and I am also getting dry coughs at night.. needs to discuss with my GP .

Are you on Ramipril? It's well known for causing the "Ramipril cough."

That may be the cause of your cough but it's usually a dry cough

Others have already pointed out that dry cough is a common side effect of ACE inhibitors like Ramipril - the alternative is usually an ARB (Angiotensin II receptor blocker) which has a very similar action - a GP can usually change the prescription without needing to check with your consultant

hi there- I too experienced the same cough. It was determined to be the ‘Ramipril-cough’ and I was moved to Candesarten which helped. Good luck. K
