Curious - fever with asthma attacks, no infection markers/signs?

Anyone else get this? Not worried, just curious as a few times now in an attack I've had a low-grade fever with zero signs of infection (bloods, chest X-ray etc in hospital show nothing).

Had a surprise A&E visit on Friday and it happened again (definitely a surprise, I only went to the GP for a routine medication review...that got out of hand quickly and is absolutely not how I enjoy spending my Friday evening, lol). I don't remember any infection developing afterwards the other times - it just came and went.

I'm *not* looking for advice on asthma management by the way - already on all the treatments I can be, very much aware of biologic criteria etc and under a tertiary specialist centre.

I'm just curious to see if anyone else has had this odd temperature thing. If I asked my asthma team I suspect they'd just fob me off and think it was anxiety or something. I'm not anxious - just curious/confused and wondering if I'm alone in this! :)

Hi no your not alone with this. I was same all I hear is you have no infection on chest x ray blah blah. and they find infection else where. or they have a different dr say totally different than the previous one did. I put it down to the weather but unsure. I mean it has to be something causing it or flare ups.

I've felt like with mine I probably genuinely don't have an infection as it's multiple markers not showing it. Though I have learned to ask for details if they give antibiotics.

I've had this at different times of year and in different weather/indoor temperature so suspect it isn't that for me.

Possibly inflammation of some kind - though I don't have eosinophilic asthma so probably not that for me.

Have u tried checking Yr heartrate/ pulse - when my chest/asthma off, my heart rate goes higher+ I burn up& sweat. It can happen that tachycardia causes asthma to be bad + burn up too.so I'm in habit now.of checking pulse whn symptomatic.hard to separate the 2 at 1st x

Oh yes good point - I'm always very tachy with asthma (not from the treatment though is hard to get them to understand that sometimes). I was this time though I didn't think it was that bad compared to other times (when I'm worse I'm especially sweaty).

Though my body is still being weird that it only has a recordable fever a few times when I am always tachy with asthma - and the fever isn't necessarily when I'm worst!

Hello there,

I wonder if it could be a viral or fungal thing causing inflammation and then a temperature rise. I can get a problem in another part of the body, (not lungs ) but it will flare my asthma and my temp will go up. Also this normally resolves.

Thanks - yes I wondered about that. I don't think I've had viral markers either but I'm not sure how sensitive they always are. Would explain why it's intermittent though!

Hello are you on steroid at all as they can cause you to get warmer than usual in many cases people are given Prednisone which is steroids to overcome a bout of asthma & if that’s not the case with you I would not worry to much. Many people are given different sprays to try & sometimes a reaction can occur myself I’m only taking the Seratide 50 spray which contains 25 micrograms of fluticasone I also moved house from Oxfordshire to Somerset & the air quality is 90% better hardly any fumes from cars & lorries so living in high traffic zones is not good for Asthma sufferers, as now I only need to take my spray once every two days Basically Air Quality is key to a healthy lifestyle

Thanks for your reply. I'm not on oral steroids/prednisone anymore. They don't work for my asthma currently or I'd probably still be on and off them a lot.

I'm not worried about this, I'm just curious to know if anyone else has had the same experience as me.

I'm in London which could definitely have better air but this has happened halfway through a hospital stay where I was inside the whole time so I'm not sure it's from air pollution especially. My lungs do better now I'm not working in central London, but all the times I can think of this happening have been since I went freelance and had less pollution.

I've been to the doctors a number of times with "breathing issues" and they have mentioned about my temperature..... they are normally more interested in my heart rate and blood pressure (blood pressure is low and hear rate is normally high) ... but sometimes I think my temperature increases when I'm tired/working hard and there is no infection/virus . The

Yes I wondered if it was this. My HR was going a bit nuts which was a big factor that got me a trip to A&E. Blood pressure perfect this time but it wasn't a bad exacerbation for me (I didn't even think it was one until they were discussing magnesium!) If it's worse then BP usually does get screwy.

I definitely get sweaty and clammy if especially bad but this wasn't that level. I feel like I've been worse and not had a raised temperature which is confusing!

When I was in my late teens, I used to struggle so much with breathing, when I had an asthma attack, that it made my heart 'race' to 180-200 beats/minute, and the effort did sometimes raise my temperature by 1-2 degrees (Farenheit, in those days) to 37.5-38.3 degrees C

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you've had a bad flare up.

I am currently going through a very bad flare up and would say my asthma is at its all time worse. I'm using a lot of reliver at night and just finished 5 days of predniolone. I would say that my temperature also does feel raised, but without the other symptoms of a fever.

I guess this could be due to excess medication/ sleep deprivation / bad asthma in general?

I'm also getting night sweats and struggling with the sleep cycle and how that affects hormones, allergies and asthma.. but that could be a separate thing!

I think grass pollen is at its peak, which could be the main issue for me.

Hope you get things under control soon.

Thanks James - this was a while ago, not that I haven't had a few in between! Sorry to hear you're in a bad flare up yourself at the moment. I don't have issues with grass pollen but I know it's bad this time of year for people who do suffer!

Obviously please do get the medical help you need, if you haven't yet. The helpline is always open if you need to chat things over.

Oh sorry , I’m so tired I didn’t even realise this was a few months old. Glad you are on the mend.

Thanks for the advice. I am in regular communication with doctors etc and will go to a&e if I continue to keep having these bad asthma attacks. Thank you
