Liminal = occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold. In mythology, this refers to the meeting of this world and another.

Regarding the painting, I came across a suggestion by the art Moira Huxley that an intriguing effect may be produced by putting a layer of charcoal over an entire watercolour painting and then rubbing out selected parts using a kneadable rubber (= eraser to our American friends). I found the effect delightfully dark, a way of producing almost night-time views.

I have not posted for some time because I developed a sequestrum in my jaw, that being a piece of diseased bone that the body will isolate and then shed. In my case it was in a nasty place where it was lacerating my tongue. A visit to an emergency dentist resulted in the tip of the sequestrum being filed off, which worked for a few days while a visit to a hospital dentistry was arranged by a consultant.

The remainder of the sequestrum, still not ready for my body to shed, was removed last Friday. The pro-seedcake (thank you for that, Winnie) took three dentists and one dental nurse, and took around half an hour. I am now recovering but still spaced out from the anaesthetic. That is not helped by my taking sublingual opioids (Abstral) for pain in my pelvis.

Perusal of the x-ray by both me and the consultant concluded that the sequestrum was in no way related to my cancer, but to a much earlier tooth extraction that left part of the root in place. To my knowledge, that extraction may have been as long as 30 years ago; I cannot recall any other extraction in the area.

My liminal place right now, then, is the junction between my usual self (plus the sublingual opioid) and my current self (now including the after effects of the anaesthetic). I hope you enjoy the artistic result, which includes also some impasto effect in the sky.

Its good to have you back! Thanks for the definition of liminal...I wasn't familiar with the word. Very thought provoking.

Nice to hear from you. Interesting effect from the charcoal over watercolor. I learn interesting art techniques from you. Hope you recover soon from your dental procedure. :)

We weren't sure if you were being liminal, (somewhere between here and there) or just plain avoiding us. Those, who like myself who were, born under the zodiac sign of Libra (scales)....it's just our fate to be liminal. Yes or No, Right or Wrong and etc. In fact, most "Libras" remain subliminal regarding their fate of being liminal.

Now as far as our American form of English, "using a kneadable rubber" in essence means using a different kind of rubber prevention of a mistake and not an eraser used after one makes a mistake.

Sorry about your tooth problem, but I think you know what they say about the English and their teeth. Not me, just the saying.....

Now as far as your Art is concerned.... You're really getting good at it...I think all that time and work you spent in T & T left you with a keen sense of colors.

Stay well, keep away from dentists and give Jacqui our warmest regards....

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

I would like to thank all those who liked my picture and those who commented. The comments were invariably kind and encouraging. J-o-h-n, I have always have terrible teeth.

I did not lose my last milk tooth until I was 33 years old. I broke it on a terrible American invention -- a Pringle! I think it was cheese and chive flavoured -- the Pringle that is. I had the tooth removed by the government dentist on Nevis, who was using dental equipment donated by the Rochester Branch of "Partners of the Americas". The equipment was aged but serviceable.

I asked that the dentist give me the tooth, as it had split perfectly across to show the structure inside. We found a small Ziploc bag and I carried the tooth to school. I showed it to the biology class that was in session, using my trusty geological hand lens as a magnifier. I think it was Neydys who fainted.

I shall keep the pictures coming. Jacqui, meanwhile, has found a love of weaving. After an introductory lesson in early February, she has set herself up with a "rigid heddle loom" and a whole new vocabulary that I am having to learn. Right now she is weaving me a thigh-length robe like thing that brings to mind Joseph's technicolour dream coat. However it turns out, I shall love it. I hope I get at least a few chances to wear it to special occasions!

Thanks for this latest work, Brent. Sorry for this jaw thing, which sounds ghastly. Pringles are not very hard --- if you cracked your milk tooth on one of those, it was barely hanging on!

But I was so proud of it, garyjp. It was my excuse for not having to act like an adult!
