Folder levels high

Hi all! It's been awhile since I posted anything.

I've been doing about 5 injections of methylcobalamin a week, for several years now. I take a food based multi with 800 mcg of folate, pretty much just on the days I inject.

My naturopath doctor prescribed methyl folate. I took a1000mcg dose and felt like I was on speed. I'm thinking it's helping my B12 work better and maybe I can cut back to 3x week.

However, 44 hours after taking it, I took a folate level test and my folate was high. I did a fasting test.

My results:

Folate

View trends

Normal value: >=4.0 ng/mL

Value

19.4

In researching I found that 17ng/ml is the upper limit.

I know one should take a B complex with B12 injections but I don't want my folate levels to go higher.

Maybe I didn't wait long enough after the methyl folate supplement to test? How can I get the other B vitamins if I don't want any more folate?

Any advice would certainly be appreciated!

Thank you kindly,

Nancy

Why are you concerned about having a high folate level?

Hi Bellabab,

Good question!

My B12 levels are off the chart and THAT doesn't concern me, but having high folate levels do?

I was googling folate levels and read some alarming info about high folate levels. I should know better. 🙄

I'm switching to methyl folate and I recieved a reply from someone who said once they switched to the methyl folate, their folate levels went down. I suspect that will be the case for me.

Thanks for getting me to think about my reaction!

🙂

I have not been able to find any scientifically valid research to confirm that folate is dangerous. All there is is stuff in the USA suggesting it MIGHT cause gut cancer. The Christian fundamentalists push his because they think God wold not like them taking it.

NICE says - doses up to 15 mg per day may be required in malabsorption states.

That's all very interesting. I think I'll stick to science! Thanks for checking on that, Bellabab!

I had the same worry after taking a private thyroid test (I SI B12 EID). My B13 off the radar which didn’t concern me but folate 21 (limit 17) which did initially, especially when I trawled internet……. But it’s just like B12, so don’t worry 😊

That is SO reassuring! It's funny how similar our experiences were.

I think I read enough times here on the forum that B12 levels will be high with injections, so I knew my levels would be high and wasn't worried. I don't remember seeing much about folate levels, though. And reading about folate levels on the internet.... scary!

Thanks so much, Libuse, for taking the time to share your experience. It helped me so much! 💕

About being speeded up on methylfolate, this happened to me. It was not bad, but then it seemed to be stressing my eyes. So now I take 1000 mcg every 3 or 4 days. Meanwhile, I take a B complex with about 600 mcg in it and I seem fine with that. Good luck.

This is sooo helpful and interesting! Thanks for sharing. I think I'll try your method and see how that works for me. I'll just have to play around with different approches to see what my body likes the best. The 600mcg that you take daily- is it folate, folic acid or methyl folate?

I can't tell you how much your information and the other forum members' information and experiences have helped me! I don't feel lost at sea anymore.

Thank you!

I'm taking Pure Encapsulation B-Complex Plus. The B-9 is a combination of 400 mcg L-5-MTHF, and 267mcg of DFE, a special Metafolin form of theirs. So glad this info is helpful.

That sounds like a very good B complex! I'll definitely check into getting it. I am feeling better overall from taking the methyl folate. I just am taking less at a time by cutting my 1000 mcg into smaller doses. But I would like to have a good B complex as well. Thanks so much for your recommendation! And yes, you've been so helpful! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.💜
