night time cough

I’ve been up and down with the start of spring resulting in multiple doses of steroids and antibiotics, all was well again until recently where I’ve developed a pretty bad cough that starts late afternoon/ evening, throughout the day I’m ok, just the odd cough but able to carry on, night time is resulting in me having to have my inhaler, coffee and sleeping sitting up just to get a bit of sleep. I do suffer from hay fever and take fexofenadine 180mg so wondering if it’s the hay fever or just asthma and if anyone has experienced anything similar?? Will go back to docs if it carries on as I do tend to decline quite rapidly when I get like this but equally over it so wondering if anyone has any tips?? Also has anyone tried any other antihistamines that work??

If you want coffee, have decaff, otherwise that might keep you awake. Water is essential too. However, do go back to the GP, as there are medications which will help you sleep.

I use Cetirizine, OTC, some other anti histamines make me too drowsy. I am allergic to everything, inc. my cat so they help with that too. I am coughing a bit lately, put it down to either/ or. Also have a small air purifier for when windows shut, but I much prefer fresh air!

I sometimes find I get a cough at the end of the day when I'm due a dose of steroid inhaler, it's a bit of early warning that my asthma needs some attention, as I'm on Fostair I can take an extra dose here and there.

I do take fostair 200/6 and have 2 puffs in the morning and 2 puffs at night but didn’t think I could have an extra dose, might be worth a try in the evening if that’s the case

I was on fostair mdi 200, four doses a day, but switched to fostair 100 mdi, because I can do a mart regime on it.

I have just one dose morning and night, and have up to six doses I can take if needed. I find this more flexible, as my asthma is very variable, sometimes I do not need much fostair, sometimes I do.

ahh no not if you are on 200/6, I was but found with montelukast I don't need it all the time anymore so I've got a bit of leeway

It is possible to use Fostair 200/6 as MART - but under the direction of an Asthma consultant or a qualified Asthma Nurse Practitioner's/GP. It’s considered a tad ‘off piste’. However, my consultant recommended it for me - as I am also using asthma ‘add ons’ - Spiriva, Montelukast, Fexofenidine, Carbocistine, Nasonex (steroid nasal spray) and Omeprazole. She also knows that, as a 78 year old , I am now sensible enough not to take extra inhalations when they aren’t needed - and, I also am trusted to have emergency packs of Prednisone and Amoxicillin for the same reason. 😊

I'm on the Fostair 100/6 mart regime and take 180 Fexofenadine. I can take two if needed but that's usually through June when the grass pollen is at its peak. Sometimes I take a Fexofenadine in the morning and a piriton before bed. I think it helps with allergies plus makes me drowsy for sleep!

hi Clarebear 35, I take fexofenadine 180 twice a day and find it very helpful with my hay fever, I also take montelukast at night which stops me coughing at night due to the hay fever causing me to have something called nasal drip. Definitely speak to your doctor there are things they can give you. X

Thanks, I’ll up the fexofenadine for now, I already take montelukast but I’ll definitely be having a conversation with the doctor
